Can I be layed off while on sick leave

If by laid off you mean your employment has been terminated, then your employer must be able to show that your termination had nothing to do with you being on a medical leave of absence. If even a small part of the decision to let you go was due to you being off on a medical leave, that is discrimination and contrary to the Human Rights Code in Ontario.
