I started working with a company as a commissioned sales person with 2 year non compete in my contract. They requested that I become self employed and invoice them for my commissions instead of being a paid employee. Does the original 2 year non compete contract still apply, or am I free to work for a competitor, or even start my own business as a competitor?

If you are becoming a contractor then, technically speaking, the employment contract you previously signed is not applicable and you are free to conduct yourself as any other self-employed individual with their own business competing in a free market.
