if an employee brings up a contract from 2014 and the company exchanged hands in 2016. Does the new employer need to honour the contract?

It will depend if a new employment contract was signed in 2016 between the company and the employee. I urge you to talk to one of our employment lawyers to discuss this situation in greater depth, as well as to determine whether your employment contracts with your employees and/or contractors are legally enforceable.
