Add Comment Question: I was a student elected Director for a not for profit organization (a college student union) I was recently dismissed by an inactive board vote (The motion was brought forth and instead of asking who approves, it was asked does anyone oppose) for expressing my concerns about a process to our student newspaper. My main question is whether this can legally be done while in a web based meeting? We do not ever have board meetings via web, they are always in person, however we do have regular round table meetings online, during this round table, a board meeting was called and I was dismissed online. (Ontario Canada) Answer: There are no formalities required for a termination of employment, which can take place via telephone, text messaging, web-based meeting, etc. The question is how much notice or pay in lieu thereof you are entitled to and the general rules apply irrespective of who the employer is. If you are not a union member, your termination entitlements are calculated based on length of service, age and position. Feel free to contact us at the number below to speak with one of our lawyers.
