My company which I've been working for going on 40 years as of may 2024 is reducing the work force by 15% by April 1st , they are offering employees to volunteer to be considered for the lay off. They state they will choose on their business needs. a severance package which they have not stated the amount at this piont will be given to those who are layed off .My question is if I volunteer to be considered for layoff and I am chosen , can I still not accept the severance package If I feel it is not adequate,? and if I don't accept it and fight for more severance can I go on unemployment while I'm fighting for a better severance package.

If you volunteer to be laid off, but are unhappy with the voluntary severance package, you will not have any leverage to negotiate an improved severance package. It is best to just wait until you are terminated by the company.
