I have a dayhome and have lost almost all of my children due to parents working from home and self isolating. I live in Alberta and do not have any EI benefits. Do I qualify for the emergency relief fund the federal government is supplying or do I need to not have any income coming in? I have gone from making $4450/mon to $1400/mon. Am I eligible or would I have to be making $0? Thanks in advance!

While the applications are not yet open, it appears that the eligibility requirements are as follows:

If you stop working for reasons relating to COVID-19 for a period of at least 14 consecutive days in the four week period to which the benefit applies, do not receive income, benefits, maternity/parental allowances, or other income during the four week period, did not quit voluntarily, you should be able to qualify.

You can qualify if you are: (1) at least 15 years old; (2) a resident of Canada; (3) in 2019 or for the 12 month period preceding the day of the application have a total income of at least $5000, either through employment, self-employment, benefits paid under the Employment Insurance Act, allowances, money or benefits paid under a provincial plan for maternity or care of a newborn.

There may be other benefits for which you could qualify, which would address a reduction in hours or income by 40% or more.

If you are unsure if you qualify, you can contact Service Canada or the CRA who are managing this benefit. If would like to discuss this with our lawyers, please contact our office.
