I am a dog groomer, and when hired, I was told I would be classified as a sub contractor. I am paid 50% commission on all the dogs I work on, I do not book my own clients, and pay for no supplies but my own grooming equipment.
I have read the information online about independent contractors, but it says "exceptions for hairdressers", and I felt this might apply to dog groomers as well, but it doesn't say what the exceptions are. My boss has been employing people this way for years, but I'm not 100% sure I'm properly classified.

Hello,

Thank you for your enquiry.

While you may be called a contractor, it depends on what type of actual relationship you have with the employer. A title does not tell the whole story. Depending on whether or not you are classified as an employee, dependent contractor, or independent contractor could be significant in terms of your entitlements upon termination (as an example).

If you would like to know more about the differences between each classification and their impacts on your rights and entitlements, please give us a call to schedule a consultation!
