Ask your question about terminations, dismissals and lay offs and an employment lawyer in Ontario, BC or Alberta will answer in minutes
I'm an employer that runs a private college. I want some of my employees to complete an online training program that is not mandatory by law but want them to complete it to stay employed. These employees are paid minimum wage and nothing stipulated on their employee letter that they must do any mandatory training. Is their training considered Work Hours or do I have to pay them to train? If so, what is the minimum? What are the raminifications if I don't pay them? Can they sue for wrongful dismissal if they don't do the training?Other than payment, are there other incentives that I could legally offer? This would be a rather costly investment and looking at alternatives to a monetary transaction to this mandatory training.
BTW I love your show. Been listening to it for years!

My name is Kyle Shimon and I am an employment lawyer with Samfiru Tumarkin LLP.
Generally speaking, you will be required to the employees their regular wages. However, there may be ways in which the training can be structured to make it as cost-effective as possible without exposing your business to liability.
To that end, I would recommend that we discuss the planned training and ways in which it might be structured to save your company money. Please send me an e-mail at kyle.shimon@stlawyers.ca so that we can schedule a time to discuss.
