How much notice do I need to give a part time employee who has been putting in on average 22 hrs per week, for 8 months. Is there any severance / holiday pay required?

Yes, as an 8-month employee, he/she is owed 1 weeks' notice of termination or pay in lieu of such notice and vacation pay under the Employment Standards Act. However, the employee may also be entitled to what's called common law notice (or common law severance), which may be significantly more than 1 week.
