My question relates to vacation entitlements. Is it legal for an employer to require an employee to take their vacation allotment in the calendar year it accrued? I'm told we can't accrue vacation days (we earn vacation at 1 1/4 days per month - 15 per year) - if it is unused at fiscal year end, we simply lose it.

Thank you for contacting our firm.

Employers can require an employee to take vacation time within 10 months following the end of the entitlement period (being either a vacation entitlement year or a stub period).

The Ministry of Labour also has helpful resources online outlining the important aspects of vacation time and vacation pay.
