I am a retired teacher and I have started working part time for a company where my job consists of Google searches, sending emails and making phone calls. I work from home, approximately 20 - 25 hours a week, and use my own computer/telephone. I am given instructions every day as to what tasks I should be working on. Would I be considered an employee or an independent contractor? Obviously, my employer's life would be easier if I were not an employee. From what I have been reading, I believe I would be considered an employee, but I have the feeling my employer will try to persuade me that I am in fact an independent contractor. Many thanks for any help you can give me to clarify this matter.

Hello,

In order to get a better sense of the substance of your employment relationship I would recommend contacting our office to schedule a call with one of our Paralegals or lawyers to better assess your matter. Based on the information you provided, you very well could be classified as either a 'dependent contractor' or 'employee', which would entitle you to severance pay if you were let go from your position.
